May 2003 - Alcatel announced that it has set up a cooperation
with Vianet Group plc, ensuring that Vianet's vOpen
telemetry platform is fully interoperable with Alcatel's
mPayment applications solution, and thus providing both
large vending operators and mobile telecom operators
in European countries with full end-to-end solutions
for m-Commerce and Telemetry.
This
partnership is a significant milestone in Alcatel's
strategy for entering the "Machine-to-Machine" field,
and one that offers extended opportunities for both
Alcatel and its mobile operator customers. Alcatel and
Vianet will jointly market the vOpen telemetry platform
and mPayment solutions and related services.
Alcatel
and Vianet will address the fundamental needs of major
international brands, large vending operators as well
as mobile telecom operators to further increase their
business by enhancing and diversifying their services.
Both
companies have been working together for some time to
create a telemetry and mobile payment offering for vending,
ticket and parking machines. End users of operators
equipped with these services will be able to buy soda,
cinema tickets, parking passes and the like, using their
mobile phone.
The
value of goods delivered by the vending machine sector,
in Europe is attributed by Euromonitor (2000 Vending
report) to be in excess of 18 Billion ?. This is the
initial focus for Telemetry, payment and supporting
management services. Additionally, the reconciliation
of transactions between the mobile operators and the
operators of vended products and services, through mediation
represents a huge growth market for both partners.
Alcatel
and Vianet recognize considerable end-user benefits.
Vending operators and major brand owners are able to
improve operational efficiency and margins, enhance
sales and increase impulse purchases and value of sales
as well. For their part, mobile telecom operators will
gain by greater volume of data traffic and value added
transactions, while strengthening customer relationships.
Demonstrations
of these products and services will be shown on the
Vianet stand at AVEX 2003, the major European vending
exhibition, held at Earls Court, in London from the
20th to 22nd of May.
