June 2003 - As one of the fastest growing segments
of consumer electronics, digital still cameras
are expected to continue to enjoy their current
popularity in the future, reports In-Stat/MDR
(www.instat.com).
A recent survey of the high-tech market research
firm's Technology Adoption Panel, reveals that
digital still cameras were the most-owned digital
camera type of any among the respondents with
nearly two-thirds owning them. With 37% of respondents
planning to buy one in the next 12 months, the
product's future looks promising.

Digital
cameras in general, are currently among the hottest
consumer items on the market. Whether digital still
cameras, digital camcorders, or PC cameras, consumers
have taken advantage of falling prices and increasing
quality to make digital imaging a marketplace phenomenon
over the past three to five years. The digital still
camera market has already been growing very quickly
in the past couple of years. Of those surveyed that
owned a digital still camera, two-thirds have owned
less than two years. In addition, nearly 26% of those
who currently own a digital still camera intend to buy
another one in the next 12 months.
In-Stat/MDR
has also found that:
- A
vast majority of current digital still camera owners
e-mail their images.
- After
digital still cameras, digital camcorders are the
next most popular type of digital camera owned by
the panel respondents. Survey results indicate that
a majority of digital camcorder owners take still
images with their camcorders, and a significant number
also e-mail those images.
- PC
cameras are also widely owned by panel respondents.
Results indicate that nearly half of PC camera owners
use their devices for live video chatting. A significant
number of PC camera owners have dual-use cameras,
a category of PC camera that allows the camera to
be detached and used to take low-resolution still
images.
- A
very small percentage of respondents currently own
a mobile phone camera. However, well over three times
the number of current owners plan to purchase one
in the next twelve months. Survey results indicate
that the ability to e-mail photos from mobile phone
cameras is by far the most attractive feature to both
current and prospective owners of these devices.
This
Market Alert is based on the In-Stat/MDR report, "Digital
Cameras:
What Do Consumers Think?", which provides data and
analysis from In-Stat/MDR's Technology Adoption Panel
with regard to their ownership, use, and plans to purchase
digital cameras. Digital cameras in this survey include:
digital still cameras, digital camcorders, PC cameras
and mobile phone cameras. The Technology Adoption Panel
consists of more early adopters and higher-end consumers
than are found in the general population.
