June 2003 - With increasing shipments of MPEG-4
enabled mobile handsets, DVD players and recorders
and digital TV sets, the pattern of growth already
experienced by the MPEG IC market in 2002 will
continue, according to In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com).
The high-tech market research firm reports that
in 2002, the MPEG IC market reached over 180 million
units and $1.3 billion in revenues. By 2007, In-Stat/MDR
expects the MPEG Video IC market to reach 344
million units and $2.8 billion in revenue.

For
the fourth year in a row ST Microelectronics was the
largest supplier of MPEG ICs, based on revenue, with
31%. ESS again held the top spot for total MPEG units
with 28%. ST came in second in total units, in 2002,
while ESS was second in revenue. LSI Logic was third
in both categories.
In-Stat/MDR
also found that:
- DVD
MPEG ICs accounted for largest part of 2002 MPEG IC
shipments in 2002 at 80 million units.
- Although
the top suppliers of MPEG Video ICs are unchanged,
new suppliers, like Mediatek and Sunplus, are bringing
their products to market and capturing significant
share.
- In
terms of individual MPEG Video IC markets, MPEG-1
Encoders are declining while MPEG-2 encoders climb.
The MPEG-1 Decoders market is stable, though Average
Selling Prices (ASPs) are dropping. MPEG-2 Decoders
for Super Video Compact Disc (SVCD) are in decline
while MPEG-2 Decoders for DVD more than doubled in
2002.
- MPEG-2
Decoders for Online Networks are a large market with
growth potential in satellite and terrestrial set
top boxes and digital televisions.
- The
MPEG-4 IC market, which was only of interest for mobile
handsets a year ago is being looked at for online
networks and published media due to the standardization
of MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC, otherwise known as H.264. H.264
offers more efficient compression, reducing the bandwidth
and storage size required for video streams. Service
providers are eager for H.264 and there is interest
from DVD and PVR manufacturers as well.
This
Market Alert is drawn from the In-Stat/MDR report, "MPEG
Video IC Market: Larger than Ever", which provides
unit and revenue share data for 2002 in ten MPEG video
IC categories: MPEG-1 Encoders, Broadcast and Professional
MPEG-2 Encoders, Consumer MPEG-2 Encoders, MPEG-1 Decoders,
SVCD MPEG-2 Decoders, DVD MPEG-2 Decoders, DBS Set Top
Box MPEG-2 Decoders, Cable Set Top Box MPEG-2 Decoders,
Other Online Network MPEG-2 Decoders, and MP@HL MPEG-2
Decoders. The report contains five year unit, ASP, and
revenue forecasts for each of these categories. Forecasts
are also provided for MPEG-4 ICs in Mobile Applications,
MPEG-4 ICs in Broadcast and Published Media Applications,
and H.264 ICs.
