November 2002 - Motorola, Inc., mmO2 and LightSurf announce
the launch of a new media messaging service that bridges
wireless and wired technologies to provide a truly complete
solution that extends enhanced capabilities to MMS-enabled
handsets, legacy handsets and the Web.
The
Motorola/LightSurf "Media Album" is built on Light Surf's
VAS (Value Added Services) technology. This service
gives mmO2 customers the ability to move beyond today's
messaging services, enabling them to share multimedia
picture-messages across any graphics-capable internet-ready
device, regardless of network standards, file format
or device type.
Offered
by mmO2 in the UK, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands,
the Media Album service will enable customers to:
- Create
multimedia messages and share them with family, friends,
and colleagues with any graphics-capable, Internet-ready
devices including new MMS-capable handsets, legacy
handsets or PCs.
- Upload
media objects (pictures, audio clips etc.) from handset
or desktop browser.
- Organize
and store a large number of media objects and messages
in a secure, online, personal album for archiving
and future viewing and sharing.
- Enhance
pictures with features like rotating, cropping and
red-eye reduction along with filters and templates
including antique finish, picture comics and paint-brush
techniques.
The
Motorola/LightSurf solution combines the power of LightSurf's
Instant Imaging technology with Motorola's proven Mobile
Services Cafe business model to provide a complete picture-messaging
package.
This
scalable server application includes a network-based
media and message storage repository, media enhancement,
and multimedia message composition, media organization,
multimedia message delivery (via MMSC), media retrieval,
and third-party multimedia content integration such
as receiving football scores. LightSurf's VAS technology
brings advanced transcoding to the Media Album solution;
ensuring multimedia messages are automatically formatted
and optimized in real time.
By
extending the messaging experience to virtually all
wireless and wired technologies, the Motorola/LightSurf
solution creates a significant opportunity to propel
the MMS market beyond today's picture-messaging services
to a new level of functionality. OVUM estimates photo-messaging
will surge in 2004, producing more than 13.1 billion
messages (up from 1.8 billion in 2003).
"The
Motorola/LightSurf solution lets us take MMS to a new
level by giving our consumers a much richer end-user
experience and creating a new differentiated avenue
from which to drive ARPU," said Kent Thexton, Chief
Marketing and Data Officer, mmO2.
Motorola's
Multimedia Messaging Solutions are not only network
and device agnostic today, but also provide a complete
migration path to match carriers' requirements. Enhanced
audio, audio streaming, video and video streaming, picture
fulfillment and advertising capabilities will soon be
available.
"MMS
is a key factor in enabling truly personalized communication
for consumers and new revenue opportunities for operators
and content providers alike," said Mike Bordelon, Corporate
Vice President and General Manager, Motorola Personal
Communications Sector. "We're extremely pleased to be
working with mmO2 and LightSurf to offer a solution
that delivers on both counts.
By
integrating the MMS VAS platform within the Mobile Services
Cafe business model, mmO2 has the ability to enter the
market quickly without high up-front costs, yet remain
in total control of the mmO2 end-user experience. Mobile
Services Cafe is the first business model for data applications
that reduces operator risk without loss of control of
the consumer offering."
"MMS
presents an excellent platform for wireless operators
to offer value- added services to their customers and
increase average revenues per customer," said Dennis
Hamann, Managing Director, LightSurf Europe, Middle
East, and Africa. "By teaming with mmO2 and Motorola,
we can quickly deliver intelligent solutions for MMS
systems -- compelling applications that are fun, easy
to use and allow people to communicate visually with
friends, family and colleagues instantly."
