November 2002 -
Motorola and Handango announced the availability of
content for Motorola handsets at www.hellomoto.com .
Here, consumers can access an entertainment page to
purchase more than 1500 Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition
(J2ME(TM)) wireless games, ring tones, graphics and
themes. The mobile applications will work on Motorola's
newly released line of data-capable phones including
the V60i, C330 and T720. In addition, ring tones are
available for some legacy models of Motorola phones.
"The
entertainment section of the www.hellomoto.com site
provides consumers with a one-stop-shop to personalize
their wireless experience with new content," said Sue
Fullman, corporate vice president of Customer Solutions
& Support for Motorola's Personal Communications Sector.
"Our on-line presence demonstrates the depth and breadth
of J2ME(TM) applications that Motorola and Handango
can provide to mobile operators to help grow their average
revenue per user and increase subscriber loyalty."
The
entertainment section of Motorola's hellomoto.com is
built on Handango's application management and provisioning
platform, Handango AMPP. This provides consumers tremendous
flexibility, making it easy to get additional content
for their Motorola phones equipped with Java technology.
These digital capabilities may be leveraged by carrier
partners in their wireless portals.
Users
in North America and Europe can purchase and download
games like Tetris as well as classic Atari games such
as Pong and Asteroids. In addition, hundreds of ring
tones featuring songs from artists like the Beatles,
Blink 182 and The Counting Crows are available. Users
can find graphics sporting NFL logos, astrological signs
and many others. By purchasing a theme pack, an all-inclusive
package that provides a related graphic, ring tone and
faceplate, users can enhance their handsets in one easy
step.
Consumers
can currently purchase mobile entertainment content
including applications, wireless games, ring tones,
graphics, themes and more with a credit card, electronic
wallet account or IVR (interactive voice response) via
a toll phone number. Applications are delivered via
short message service (SMS) text messages and downloaded
directly to the phones.
Wireless
research firm the ARC Group estimates that by 2003,
421 million handsets will be Java enabled. This represents
a sizeable market opportunity for both firms to address.
"By
providing more than 1500 applications, ringtones, graphics
and other digital content to users in five different
languages, our alliance with Motorola has been extremely
productive," said Laura Rippy, chief executive officer
of Handango. "With several cool and practical new handsets
and a clear focus on value-added applications, Motorola
is a powerful force in the mobile market, and we're
pleased to be so closely aligned with them."
Under
terms of the alliance, the two firms are also working
together to jumpstart the creation of applications optimized
for Motorola handsets and certify those applications
using Handango Mobile Ready certification procedures.
With Handango Mobile Ready certification, applications
are verified to be network compliant and deliverable
over-the-air. The two firms also expect to collaborate
on marketing and demand generation activities to drive
carrier awareness and deployment of content for Motorola
handsets.
