December 2002 - Hutchison 3G UK, owned by Hong-Kong
based Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, has revealed its long-awaited
pricing of third generation mobile services and handsets
for so-called "Founders."
The
company said the first 20,000 "Founders" to sign up
to 3's services for a minimum 12-month contract will
pay £59.99 to £99.99 a month. These pricing
options, aimed at heavy users, exclude international
calls, calls made while abroad and premium rate calls.
Handsets will be on sale at a starting price of £399
before promotional discounts.
Hutchison 3G UK will be the UK's first commercial 3G
service and will deliver live video calls, digital mapping
and location-based services, as well as video clips
of Premiership football highlights, music, games, news
and finance. As the first mobile operator to launch
the next generation of mobiles to European consumers,
pricing is being keenly watched by its competitors mmo2
PLC, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile.

The handsets include the Motorola A830, with tri-band
GSM/GPRS/W-CDMA roaming, the NEC e606 and NEC e808,
which features a QWERTY keyboard. Users of the A830
and e808 will also enjoy larger screens and enhanced
e-mail capabilities. The the e606 and A830 are priced
at £399 and the e808 will cost £449. However,
Three said it would be offering special promotional
deals to the 20,000 founder customers.
Customers
who pre-register on the company's web-site will also
be invited to demonstrations at the company's retail
