January 2003 - Taiwan operator Far EasTone Telecommunications
has selected Ericsson as sole supplier for a seamless,
island-wide 2G/3G system. Ericsson will expand and upgrade
the present 2G-system, delivering a fully integrated
GSM-GPRS-WCDMA solution that ensures all Far EasTone's
customers a seamless evolution from 2G to 3G.
The
3G agreement with Far EasTone comprises a complete 3G
system including WCDMA radio access network, core network
and a wide portfolio of comprehensive professional services
for Yuan-Ze Telecommunications, subsidiary of Far EasTone.
Implementation
of the WCDMA-system will start immediately and will
be managed by Ericsson on a turnkey basis. In addition,
the two companies have also signed a framework agreement
for the expansion of Far EasTone´s present GSM network
and associated services.
"Ericsson
has worked with FET as a network infrastructure supplier
since we first launched our GSM mobile network in January
1998. We are delighted to further strengthen this relationship
by working together on the speedy roll-out of our 3G
network." said Jan Nilsson, President of Far EasTone.
"Furthermore, the ability to migrate from GSM services
to high speed 3G services will give Far EasTone and
its customers a marked advantage in the form of island-wide
seamless high-quality services.
"After
a thorough evaluation process, we are very proud to
come out as the selected sole supplier," said Ericsson
Taiwan President Jan Signell. "I am sure that Ericsson
and Far EasTone will be a winning combination in the
advanced Taiwanese mobile multi-media market." The WCDMA
contract with Yuan-Ze Telecommunications, subsidiary
of FarEasTone, confirms Ericsson's position as the world's
leading supplier of 3G mobile systems. Ericsson has
been named as vendor in 38 out of 73 publicly announced
WCDMA agreements to date and has a global market share
of 40 per cent.
