Nokia and Orca Interactive show video streaming to TV, PCs and the new Nokia 9210i Communicator in Singapore (Back to News Reports)

At the Nokia Connection 2002 show in Singapore today, Nokia, a world leader in mobile and broadband communications, and Orca Interactive, a global market leader in developing applications for interactive TV, will use Orca’s iTV application software to demonstrate streamed video services over Nokia broadband access and intelligent edge infrastructure. Demonstration participants will be able to see video services delivered to TV, PCs and the Nokia 9210i Communicator.

Nokia will demonstrate the cost-efficient delivery and dynamic bandwidth management necessary for full video-on-demand services via the Nokia D500 multiservice access platform and the Nokia ASR 2020 intelligent edge router. The service solution demonstrates how video content can be multicasted through the operator network, allowing multiple video streams to be delivered to end-user terminal devices such as TVs and PCs.

Using Orca application software, users of the Nokia 9210i Communicator will be able to view a series of movie trailers and choose the movie they would like to order via their video-on-demand service. The application will demonstrate how operators and service providers could offer multimedia services that take full advantage of both mobile and fixed broadband networks. End-users of the service will be able view movie trailers and then select a movie while on the move, requesting the movie of their choice to be delivered over the broadband fixed network at a particular time when they would be at home to view.

Hollywood-Star goes T-Mobile (Back to News Reports)

Famous actress Catherine Zeta-Jones will
be T-Mobile’s global spokeswoman and
will appear in T-Mobile’s worldwide advertising campaign. The campaign will start this summer when US subsidiary VoiceStream will be re-branded "T-Mobile US".

Zeta-Jones – who starred in such films as "The Mask of Zorro" and "Traffic" – says she was attracted to T-Mobile’s "get more from life" message because it mirrors the way she uses mobile communications to enhance her own quality of life: "The ability to reach someone on a whim to share a story, a laugh or a memory is incredibly empowering. As a global company, T-Mobile is the perfect catalyst for that type of spontaneous communication."

T-Mobile International CEO Kai-Uwe Ricke praises Zeta-Jones as "the perfect choice to represent T-Mobile" due to her "strong international appeal as a respected actress who lives life to the fullest." VoiceStream CEO John Stanton stresses that Zeta-Jones has "the right combination of international appeal, intellect, and style and exudes a remarkable attitude of self-confidence and reassurance – all the qualities we want the T-Mobile brand to represent in the marketplace."

While Zeta-Jones will be the worldwide spokesperson for T-Mobile, André Agassi and Stefanie Graf will appear in more content-focused campaigns, e.g. advertisements in connection with T-Mobile’s European t-sports service.

Motorola and Trafficmaster Co-Develop and Launch Smartnav - Intelligent Navigation with a Personal Touch (Back to News Reports)

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Trafficmaster, the UK's leading supplier of live traffic information services, and Motorola (NYSE: MOT), announced today the UK launch of Smartnav. Smartnav combines navigation and mobile telephony technologies from Motorola, with Trafficmaster's predictive, historical, live, and incident traffic information to deliver route guidance to drivers. It also provides a personal assistant service offering security support, emergency service liaison and booking service for flowers, wine and champagne.

Motorola's navigation application makes the driver's life simpler by wirelessly transmitting traffic-dependent, turn-by-turn directions to in- vehicle devices and mobile phones. In conjunction with this scalable line of navigation software, Trafficmaster will deliver personalized, location specific route guidance, thus enabling motorists to drive to their destinations safely, comfortably and efficiently.

Smartnav incorporates a number of features that set it apart from other navigation systems on the market. At the push of a button the driver is connected to a virtual 'personal assistant' (PA). Smartnav is able to confirm the location of the vehicle and the virtual PA will enter a destination or an instruction into the navigation server. The cellular call ends after the route is received, and Smartnav then provides automated turn-by-turn verbal instructions along the route to guide you to your destination.

Smartnav stores maps and calculates routes using central Motorola server software based at Trafficmaster's headquarters, unlike other systems that rely on information stored on a CD. This ensures that map and point-of-interest information can be updated regularly and motorists are not responsible for purchasing new CDs to maintain accurate information.

When a route is calculated and sent to your car from the Motorola server software, it takes into account the quickest and easiest route using Trafficmaster's traffic information. With the addition of Route Guard, an application that proactively monitors traffic congestion, drivers are alerted to problems and are given the option to choose an alternative route to avoid traffic delays.

Innovative Bluetooth(TM) Platform and Development Kit Speed Wireless Application Development (Back to News Reports)

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, June 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) today announced general availability of its high performance Bluetooth Platform, enabling the rapid development and deployment of cost- effective Bluetooth products. With fully integrated hardware, software, reference designs and development kits, Motorola's Bluetooth Platform is an ideal RF-to-applications platform for developing a variety of Bluetooth-enabled wireless applications, such as cellular handsets, personal digital assistants and headsets.

"Motorola's experience and longstanding involvement in the Bluetooth arena has resulted in the company's broad Bluetooth portfolio that offers expertise in silicon to protocols to new coexistence mechanisms," said Joyce Putscher, director at In- Stat/MDR. Estimates by In-Stat/MDR indicate that Bluetooth chipset shipments will climb from 10.4 million units in 2001, with a conservative estimate of 48 million for 2002, growing to 150 million in 2003. By 2006, Bluetooth IC revenue is expected to exceed $2.5 billion. (In- Stat/MDR: May 2002)

"Motorola's Bluetooth platform is engineered to deliver high-quality audio and radio performance, low development costs and best-in-class interference rejection performance. This platform is expected to continue to set the industry standard for interoperability, complete functionality and compliance with the Bluetooth specification."

Bluetooth wireless technology is a cost-effective, low-power wireless connectivity technology that operates in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM band and, therefore, Bluetooth-enabled devices are often exposed to a high level of interference. Motorola's patent- pending efficient implementation of joint detection and maximum likelihood sequence estimator (JD/MLSE) technology, enable the Bluetooth Platform to flourish in an interference environment. This in turn enhances the user's experience, by helping to improve the operating range and throughput, and by extending the battery life of the end product.

Ericsson demonstrates Cross-Technology Multimedia Messaging Services at 3G World Congress (Back to News Reports)

In an industry-first, Ericsson today demonstrated cross-technology multimedia messaging sevices (MMS) over CDMA2000 and GPRS at the 3G World Congress in Hong Kong. MMS enables consumers to send and receive multimedia messages containing images, text and sound.

"Ericsson is committed to the evolution of CDMA2000 and to helping operators supply the most innovative mobile Internet services to their customers," said Ĺke Persson, Head of Ericsson Mobile Systems CDMA. "This MMS demonstration further solidifies Ericsson's commitment as the only wireless vendor providing end-to-end support for all paths to 3G."

The cross-technology demonstration, using Ericsson's market leading MMS solution, includes sending MMS from a CDMA2000-enabled PDA to a GPRS terminal.
