8th December 2003 - Orange launches ‘Street Smart’,
an innovative interactive online game, to teach mobile
phone users about the serious safety issues surrounding
mobile phone crime, personal safety and road safety.
The online game can be found on the new Orange Phone
Safety site http://www.orange.co.uk/safety
and is intended to demonstrate the safety measures that
anyone of any age can easily grasp to become street
smart and avoid having their mobile phones stolen. In
the UK alone, 710,000 mobiles were stolen in 2001.
The Phone Safety Game features four real life scenarios
- daytime in the city, the early evening rush hour,
dark alleys at night and a crowded festival. The animated
game takes the main character, Dirk, through various
challenges including passing by a street gang-potential
phone thieves, avoiding potholes on pavements by crossing
the street without getting hit by oncoming traffic and
dodging a vicious dog. Once completed, players can email
the Phone Safety Game to friends to challenge them to
beat their top score.
Oranges safety messages have been endorsed by
the Home Office and can be found on the new Orange Phone
Safety site, which is the hub for information about
Oranges safety initiatives. The site contains
advice on personal safety, road safety and mobile phone
crime and also features a video clip, which can be watched
and emailed to friends and family. The video clip focuses
on an infamous scam thieves are using every day to steal
mobile phones from people on the street.
Niamh Byrne, Head of Sponsorship, PR and Events, Orange
UK, said:
Orange are committed to driving awareness of
safety issues and we have developed a series of initiatives
which communicate these messages to our customers in
a relevant way. Our new phone safety site has tips and
information on phone crime, personal safety and road
safety, as well as interactive games, which roll out
the messages in a hugely visual and fun way.
