6th May 2004 - Nokia has signed deal for the expansion
of Telefónica Móvil Chile's GSM network
nationwide. Deliveries have already begun, and the network
expansion is expected to be implemented and operational
by early 2005.
Under the agreement Nokia will deploy GSM/EDGE radio
network equipment, including base stations and base
station controllers. In addition Nokia will provide
installation and an extensive range of care services
provided by the Nokia NetActä operations support
system platform, including emergency support, software
maintenance, plus training to maintain the competitiveness
of the solution.
"This new contract further consolidates our partnership
with Nokia, which has proven its ability to deliver
quality equipment and services," says Oliver Flogel,
CEO, Telefónica Móvil Chile. "With
this expansion, Telefónica Móvil will
be able to further enhance service to our customers
nationwide in Chile and enable us to grow our business
as we evolve to more advanced mobile services."
"We are pleased to continue supporting Telefónica
Móvil as a leading pioneer of mobile services
in Latin America," says Patricio Valenzuela, Account
Director, Networks, Nokia. "With this expansion
Telefónica Móvil will be able to boost
coverage and capacity to its subscribers as it paves
the way for more advanced mobile services. This expansion
also underscores our excellent relationship with Telefónica
Móvil Chile."
Nokia is the main supplier of Telefónica Móvil's
GSM/EDGE radio access and GPRS networks. In October
2003, Telefónica Móvil launched Latin
America's first commercial EDGE services in Chile with
the Nokia EDGE solution.
Telefónica Móvil Chile is managed by Telefónica
Móviles, one of the four major mobile telephony
consortiums worldwide. In Chile, Telefónica Móvil
has two networks with two different technologies, thus
providing its 2.5 million subscribers a wide breadth
of products and services. This will again consolidate
its leading position, particularly now with the new
availability of advanced services based on the GSM/GPRS
1900 network.
