Nokia implements Brazil's first TETRA system [Back to News Reports]

25th May 2004 - After a thorough analysis of available digital trunking technologies, the Brazilian professional mobile radio operator Telcom Telecomunicações do Brasil Ltda (Telcom) has selected the Nokia TETRA system to cover the three main Brazilian cities, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. This will be the first TETRA system for professional mobile radio use in the Brazilian market.

Telcom is expanding its current offering with digital systems to meet its customers' demands for digital services. Telcom serves professionals with critical communication needs, such as public service agencies, municipalities, traffic control, transportation services, public utilities, enterprises, oil and gas companies, and seaport authorities. Digital systems enable intelligence to be built-in, bring higher quality and have new features that are not possible with analogue technology.

Under the terms of the contract, Nokia is providing Telcom with a Nokia TETRA system comprising TETRA switching equipment, TETRA base stations, and a dispatcher workstation. The system has been delivered and is already operational.

"With the implementation of TETRA digital technology standard in Brazil, Telcom is now prepared to offer new solutions to address the increasing demands for more advanced voice and data applications required by our customers," says Mr Jorge Brandão, General Manager of Telcom Telecomunicações do Brasil Ltda. "TETRA outperforms analogue radio systems in many ways, greatly enhancing user experience."

"We are very happy to provide our advanced Nokia TETRA system to Telcom," says Alexandre Braha, Senior Account Manager, Nokia: "This will make it possible for Telcom to enter the digital professional mobile radio world with all its advantages."

"In addition, this contract clearly represents an opening of the TETRA market in Brazil, and a significant step for Nokia towards leadership in the market," Mr Braha continues.

Nokia is a leading supplier of TETRA networks and terminals and has demonstrated an unique capability to deliver multi-switch TETRA networks with the ability to provide all TETRA services uniformly countrywide. Special features include: top-class communication security, fast group calls, sophisticated emergency call functionality, prioritized calls, advanced messaging and data communication services, including packet data. The open interfaces of Nokia TETRA solutions enable seamless integration to command and control systems. Nokia continues investing in TETRA radio technology and systems for the benefit of present and future customers.
