2nd June 2004 - Dutch mobile operator T-Mobile Netherlands
has become the latest European telco to roll out a revolutionary
high-volume text message processing solution from Telsis.
The operator has deployed Telsis SMS Routers at the
heart of its network, dramatically boosting SMS throughput
for a new generation of advanced SMS-based services
including mass voting events.
Already in use with several operators and the subject
of a global distribution agreement with Ericsson, the
Telsis SMS Router is a radical departure from the old
store-and-forward SMS-handling architecture based around
SMSCs (Short Message Service Centres).
A high speed processing engine and intelligent switch
in a single carrier-grade platform, the SMS Router intercepts
all person-to-person and service provider SMS traffic
and routes it according to programmable criteria at
a rate of millions of messages an hour. Multiple SMS
Routers can be teamed to deliver even greater message
throughput.
T-Mobile has configured its SMS Routers for direct delivery
of all messages destined for in-coverage mobile phones
and many hosted services such as mass voting events
and competitions. Only messages that cannot be delivered
instantly are routed for store-and-forward treatment,
the SMS Routing system automatically balancing loads
across T-Mobiles SMSCs to ensure maximum performance.
The Telsis SMS Router is a unique combination
of carrier-grade reliability, power and price. It has
given us a massive increase in SMS capacity at a fraction
of the cost of additional SMSC licences, says
T-Mobile SMS product manager Margreeth van Ramshorst.
It means we can now easily handle mass text events
such as votes and competitions without any impact on
simultaneous person-to-person messaging, thus developing
a powerful new income stream while protecting an important
existing one.
At the same time, the SMS Router gives us a foundation
upon which we can offer new types of SMS-based services
to both service providers and phone users. One of these,
Virtual Mobile, enables our service provider customers
to publish a single response number and receive text
messages from any phone user on any network.
T-Mobile Netherlands is a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary
with sister companies in the USA, Austria, Germany,
the Czech Republic and the UK. It operates an 1800 GSM
network and has more than 2 million customers.
With its headquarters, research and production site
in the UK, Telsis (www.telsis.com)
has sales and support operations in France, Germany,
Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Singapore and Australia.
The company offers a range of carrier-grade infrastructure
platforms including intelligent SMS Routers, IN service
control points, switches and advanced IVR solutions
that support a wide variety of innovative value-added
text and voice services. Telsis products are in use
with major fixed and mobile network operators around
the world.
