29th jun 2004 - Alcatel today announced availability
of the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM), an advanced
management solution that enables carriers worldwide
to increase the adoption rate of new generation packet
services.
As carriers move from offering basic Internet services
to widespread implementation of IP/MPLS and Ethernet
based business services, Alcatel's new solution simplifies
the complexity of provisioning and managing these services
while ensuring strict adherence to service level agreements.
Network operators can increase their control of the
network, simplify service delivery with user-friendly
tools, more rapidly isolate and troubleshoot network
problems, and consequently enrich their end-customer's
experience.
"Service providers will not achieve tangible, sustainable
success with IP services unless they recognize that
automating the management of IP networks is not a 'nice-to-have',
it is a 'must-have'," said Mike Smith, co-founder and
managing director of research with Stratecast Partners,
an industry analysis firm. "Alcatel is taking a customer-centric
approach to providing IP services by pulling information
from multiple sources and providing correlated information
which streamlines the overall management process. Service
providers will derive value from this and will have
the opportunity to leverage the capability in providing
differentiated services to their customers."
Iberdrola, a utility company based in Spain, selected
the Alcatel 5620 SAM and 7750 Service Router as part
of its initiative to migrate its telecom network to
an Internet Protocol (IP) based backbone. By harmonizing
new IP and Ethernet-based technology and existing services
over a unified IP/MPLS infrastructure, Iberdrola can
continue to deliver existing services and rapidly roll
out new services, such as virtual private LAN service.
"The Alcatel 5620 SAM provides advanced IP service
assurance capabilities, and allows Iberdrola to have
a proper perspective on and control over the elements
and services of the overall network. This will help
Iberdrola to manage the data network in a similar way
to other traditional networks that we own," said Miguel
Angel Sánchez Fornié, Systems, Control and Telecommunications
Director of Iberdrola.
"Alcatel is delivering to the market a comprehensive
portfolio of IP/MPLS and Ethernet solutions, which are
gaining traction with customers worldwide", said Basil
Alwan, president of Alcatel IP activities. "With the
newest enhancement of the Alcatel 5620 SAM, we complete
the package, ensuring that service providers can roll
out, provision and monitor IP/MPLS services with confidence
and flexibility. The result is an improved experience
for service providers and their customers."
Alcatel is committed to increasing carrier profitability
through the continuous investment in and improvement
of OSS solutions. The 5620 SAM is an integral addition
to the industry-leading 5620 network management portfolio,
which is deployed in hundreds of service provider sites
around the world. New features in the 5620 SAM reflect
an interactive development approach for Alcatel's growing
base of IP/MPLS service provider customers who are focused
on solving the business challenge of network and service
migration.
The 5620 SAM is able to increase revenue opportunities
and reduce on-going operational expenses for service
providers based on multiple new features. For example,
service provisioning of multiple VPN technologies is
automated, based on wizards and service templates in
order to reduce complexity. Advanced Operations, Administration
and Maintenance (OA&M) tools improve service troubleshooting
and monitoring which can significantly impact day-to-day
costs associated with truck rolls, deployment of technical
resources and compliance with strict government security
regulations such as the U.S. law CALEA (Communications
Assistance for Law Enforcement Act) and similar requirements
recently established by governments around the world.
The Manager also allows the provider to extend the
view of their customer's network beyond element management
by enabling management of multiple IP/MPLS routers and
switches under a single umbrella. As a result they can
more quickly identify and rectify network problems,
improving customer satisfaction. With the improved billing
and service assurance experience, the risk of customer
churn should be notably reduced, which impacts marketing
and customer care initiatives. Modular software packages
increase the flexibility of deployment scenarios, ensuring
the provider can offer the most appropriate service
scenario per customer.
