30th jun 2004 - DHAKA - Motorola Inc.s Global
Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS), has been awarded an
extension of an existing frame agreement to expand and
upgrade the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 800Mhz
network for Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited (PBTL)
operating under the brand name of CityCell. The deal,
signed in April 2004, has a projected value of US$50
million for purchases of equipment and services.
The enhanced CDMA2000 1X infrastructure, scheduled
to be commercially deployed by third quarter 2004, will
add capacity to support another 500,000 subscribers
on PBTLs CityCell network. The agreement includes
the deployment of Motorolas CDMA SoftSwitch (MSS-C),
the second announced deployment of MSS-C in the Indian
sub-continent.
This frame agreement also includes deployment of Motorolas
Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solution. Including
this PoC deal with PBTL, Motorola has won 14 contracts
with customers operating in 20 countries and territories
worldwide to supply PoC infrastructure solutions for
both CDMA2000 1X and GSM/GPRS networks. This total includes
deals for commercially launched systems in North and
Latin America, and a number of contracts with other
operators in Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle
East.
PBTL has been setting the benchmark for the Bangladesh
telecom industry. Cellular adoption in the country is
growing quickly and we are taking proactive steps to
meet the growing demand and offer innovative services
like PoC. We have built a strong relationship with Motorola
over the last decade, and trusted their reputation as
a leader in commercial CDMA deployment in Asia,
said Chris Maloy, CEO, PBTL.
Motorola has been the central network provider
to PBTL for over 11 years, with over 70 percent of PBTLs
subscribers on Motorolas radio access network,
said Simon Leung, senior vice president, Motorola, Inc.
and general manager, GTSS Asia Pacific. The new
CDMA2000 1X network will prepare PBTL for future growth,
as well as enable it to harness latest mobile services
such as PoC as new revenue streams. This is an example
of the close relationship we have with Asian operators
in empowering growth at every stage of their development.
The MSS-C plays a vital role in PBTLs CDMA2000
1X network expansion as it provides the operator with
a versatile, integrated switching platform that supports
both voice and data traffic while offering cost and
network support advantages over legacy switching solutions.
When completed, the new CDMA2000 1X network will allow
PBTLs subscribers in major cities such as Dhaka
and Chittagong and the South East region of Bangladesh
to enjoy advanced services, such as high-speed Internet
access for faster music downloads. Subscribers can also
look forward to PoC service that will enable them to
connect with one or many others at the push of a button
via handsets designed to incorporate this feature.
Motorola is part of the lending syndicate that is providing
financing for the PBTL expansion.
