25th October 2004 - Alcatel announced that it has been
awarded a contract by Bouygues Telecom for the hosting,
operation and maintenance of its WiFi network core,
which was launched into commercial service at the beginning
of October.
This service enables Bouygues Telecom to offer a range
of value-added services to its corporate, professional
and general public subscribers who connect to more than
6000 hot spots in France and Europe: management, billing
of access to the WiFi service (subscription or on-line
payment with credit card), "roaming"* with Bouygues
Telecom's wifi partners, and management of their WiFi
account on the Internet.
In the framework of this contract, Alcatel gives a
commitment regarding WiFi service availability (performance,
quality of service and efficiency of operation) by providing
an open-ended WLAN core solution connected to Bouygues
Telecom's "hotspots"** in France.
"The solution proposed by Alcatel was chosen for three
reasons: it was the most innovative, it best satisfied
our needs, and its operational deployment was very rapid.
We have equal confidence in the capacities offered by
Alcatel's WLAN platform and the ability of its teams
to provide value-added services for our customers within
the set times", states Yves Legrand, Technical Director
of Networks and Services at Bouygues Telecom.
Marc Rouanne, Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel's
Mobile Communications Activities, comments: " This contract
constitutes a major new WLAN reference for Alcatel in
France. By offering this type of network service, Alcatel
leaves the operators free to focus on their core activity
while at the same time controlling their investments,
and places the end-user at the core of the mobile telephony
experience".
* "Roaming": function that allows users to connect
to the WiFi service irrespective of who their original
operator its. The "Wireless Link" association, created
on 3rd October 2003 with the aim of developing interoperability
over all its members' "hotspots"**, today counts seven
WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Provider). The end-users
will thus have a uniform level of service overall the
hotspots** and benefit from optimum WiFi coverage.
** "hotspot": highly frequented public place (through
which people pass or in which they stay, such as railway
stations, airports, conference centres, exhibition grounds,
hotels, etc.) where people can access the Internet and/or
company applications via a wireless broadband (WiFi)
network
