Motorola Selected To Expand Maxis Communication’s Mobile Network [Back to News Reports]
8th November 2004 - Motorola Electronics Sdn Bhd has been awarded a frame contract to expand and upgrade cellular and radio access networks for Maxis Communications Bhd (“Maxis”), Malaysia’s leading telecommunications provider. The contract, covering three years, furthers Motorola’s long-standing relationship with Maxis, where Motorola has built and maintained the Malaysian operator’s current 2G and 2.5 networks.

Maxis today has more than 5.12 million mobile subscribers throughout Malaysia. Strategically, this contract will enable Motorola to support Maxis in its smooth and gradual evolution to EDGE/3G networks, where Maxis’ customers will be able to enjoy high-speed, converged and seamless wireless services.

Additionally, the contract allows for Motorola to provide a comprehensive portfolio of professional services along with the physical network enhancement. These services include network design, system optimization and systems integration. This agreement with Maxis further strengthens Motorola’s status as a leading network provider in the Malaysian market. Motorola first started installing Maxis’ GSM system 10 years ago, and in 2001 installed its GPRS wireless data network.

“We are honoured to take this relationship with Maxis to greater heights with the building of its next-generation networks as well as helping Malaysia’s leading operator to harness new revenue streams. Motorola’s experience and expertise in building and maintaining telecommunications networks will enable Maxis to chart a smooth migration path to 3G.” said John Edwards, Vice President and General Manager for Motorola’s Infrastructure business in Asia.

Maxis Chief Executive Officer Dato Jamaludin Ibrahim said: “Maxis has always been in the forefront by offering our customers the latest in mobile services, and this latest network enhancement is another example of our efforts in delivering high quality wireless experience to our subscribers. Motorola has been Maxis’ trusted network provider for the last 10 years, and we continue to benefit from their reputation and experience in providing leading-edge mobile technologies.”

A portion of the contract is being financed by Motorola.
