Google takes another step into mobile search results [Back to News Reports]

20th June 2005 - Google has given mobile phone users a reason to rejoice with their new search service that only links pages that have been formatted for display on small screens.

Google has added a "Mobile Web" button to the options page. Using this button, users will only receive links to pages that have been formatted for the smaller displays of mobile devices, according to the company.


The service is XHTML-based. The only thing a user needs is a mobile device with a Web browser and can enter a query in the search box at http://www.google.com or http://www.google.com/xhtml.

The other options that are available to mobile users are "Web," to run a query against the full Google Web index, "Images," to search for pictures, and "Local," for Google's business directory for local merchants.

Google also offers a similar Web search service for phones that support wireless markup language instead of XHTML.

The older mobile search option is Google SMS that allows users to retrieve text information from the search index using Short Message Service. Users need to send a query as a text message to Google's SMS code, which is 46645, and they will receive text results after a minute's wait.
