7th Febuary 2006 - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has unveiled
a terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) phone,
the first of its kind for commercial services satisfying the
European W-CDMA standard.
Samsung said in a report Monday (Feb. 6) that the SGH-P900
model, successful in field trials in Germany and France, will
be unveiled during the 3GSM World Congress 2006 next week
in Barcelona, Spain.
The phone's full-fledged launching is scheduled for the second
quarter, before the World Cup finals begin in June in Germany,
the company said. Major DMB phone makers expect special seasonal
demand for their handsets ahead of the largest international
soccer event.
"The 2006 World Cup Germany will be a breakthrough for
the worlds DMB phone market to speed up growth,"
Lee Ki-Tae, president of Samsungs Telecommunications
Network Business, said in the report.
Although several T-DMB phones made by Samsung have been showcased
for trial operations in Europe, SGH-P900 will become its first
such kind for commercial services meeting the European standard,
the company added.
The phone measures 92 x 49 x 26 millimeters and weighs 124
grams. It has such multimedia functions as TV and radio capabilities,
a 2-megapixel camera and an MP3 player.
To receive TV signals, users can flip the 2.2-inch TFT-LCD
screen of the phone to a horizontal position for optimal viewing.
The QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) screen shows as many as 30 pictures
per second, allowing customers to enjoy live broadcasting
as vividly as they can at home, the company said.
The phones multitasking function enables users to make
calls or send text messages while watching a DMB program.
In addition, the phone has a built-in USB port and Bluetooth
functionality.
The 128-Mbyte user memory and the external memory allows
the phone to record and save TV broadcasts, videos and games.
