| 14th Febuary 2006 - Forget a romantic meal for two. This
Valentine's Day 48% of twenty-somethings will be home alone
- with London exposed as the most love-lorn city in the UK.
T-Mobile commissioned independent researchers ManPower* to
interview over 2000 adults aged 20-29 in London, Edinburgh,
Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds to shed light on
the state of the nation's relationships.
Leading the lonely-hearts brigade was London with 61% admitting
they would be spending February 14th alone - compared to just
a quarter in Edinburgh - and 44% were desperate to find a
last-minute date for the big day.
Lonely London also polled the highest number of long-term
singletons with 44.5% admitting to being out of a relationship
for over a year, compared to Mancunians where the majority
are newly single with 37.5% splitting from their partners
less than a month ago.
And it seems twenty-somethings are putting their careers
before finding love. 67.4% said their biggest priority in
life was their career - compared to just 32.6% who think love
is most important.
To help love-starved Britons T-Mobile is hosting a series
of dating events across the UK. Starting in London this week,
they will launch the first video calling-dating event that
sees new mobile phone technology help singletons find love.
Tracey Cox, the UK's leading relationships expert comments:
"Dating in the 21st Century is a complex process, especially
for young people in their twenties who face the juxtaposition
of selfishly wanting to pursue their career aspirations while
longing to find the perfect partner, to avoid Bridget Jones
syndrome in their thirties.
"People are drawn to London to achieve their career
goals, their lives are hectic, working long hours in a competitive
workplace - and such conditions leave little time for dating.
"My advice is to make use of time saving technology
to help you find love on the move, try internet dating or
better still get your mates to do the searching for you, it
will save you time and give you a wider circle of people to
choose from - they can even text or video call you with prospective
dates so you don't have to go on a blind date!"
T-Mobile is promising to lend a hand by hosting a dating
event in London this week; they will use new mobile phone
technology, video calling to help singletons find love. Using
the latest Sony Ericsson K608i video calling handsets, T-Mobile
will endeavour to find the perfect love match for contestants
by allowing them to meet potential suitors via video calling,
they can then decide whether they then meet face-to-face.
Phil Chapman, Marketing Director, T-Mobile UK comments: "The
results show that in most cities across the UK, twenty somethings
place great importance on their careers, but they also want
to find love, especially with Valentines Day fast approaching.
"We wanted to create a fun dating event using video
calling to show people how they can meet more people through
their friends without the dreaded blind date! Each contestant
at the event will automatically win a pair of Sony Ericsson
K608i video calling handsets so that they can continue their
love affair as the technology allows couples to stay close
even when they're not together."
The event will take place this week at Dust Bar in Shoreditch
from 7.30pm, for further information please visit www.t-mobile.co.uk/videocalling.
