3rd April - Orange began offering mobile high speed Internet
access at the beginning of April. Lugano will be the first
city to be provided with the HSDPA mobile phone technology.
Thanks to its partnership with Orange AIL is the first utilities
company of mobile high speed Internet access technology. any
Swiss city to offer its customers this Seven cities will follow
suit by the end of 2007. This mobile high speed Internet access
is faster than entry-level ADSL packages and is suitable for
both businesspeople as well as for people who want to dispense
with a landline connection.
Since the end of 2006, Orange has been testing the mobile
high speed technology HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
with selected customers in Zurich and Lausanne. The tests
havebeen successful. Orange is offering its customers the
new mobile high speed connection ineight cities through the
end of the year.
HSDPA enables mobile Internet access with data transmission
rates of up to 1.8 Mbit per second. This means that mobile
Internet connections are possible that are up to six times
faster than current entry-level ADSL packages. Fixed network
and ADSL connections can thus be conveniently abandoned. The
mobile high speed connections can be used with a mobile phone
or a laptop and a data card. With HSDPA, large quantities
of data can be received effortlessly. For example, when receiving
an email with large attachments such as pictures and presentations,
accessing data on the corporate network, engaging in video
telephony, watching live TV, and downloading music and videos
from the Internet.
Start in Ticino, Expansion to Eight Additional Cities
Starting at the beginning of April, Lugano will become the
first city in which Orange will provide HSDPA technology.
The partnership between Orange and AIL utilities is at the
core of this proposition in Lugano. A growing number of cities
offer their inhabitants wireless internet access. The city
of Lugano and its utilities company, AIL, offer wireless internet
access via state-of- the-art mobile technology such as UMTS
and HSDPA. Mobile internet access responds to an indisputable
need among both business and private customers. It can therefore
qualify as a public service such as electricity, gas and water.
With AIL wireless, our services are based on mobile telephony
technology rather than on Wireless LAN. This allows us to
offer mobile internet access to our customers not only in
Lugano but in all of Switzerland and even abroad. With HSDPA,
we can achieve transmission rates that until now were only
possible with ADSL and Wireless LAN, says Nelio Rigamonti,
Director of AIL.
Extensive coverage for Geneva and Zurich will follow in the
summer. By the end of 2007, the cities of St. Gallen, Basel,
Lucerne, Bern, and Lausanne will also be covered by HSDPA.
