First look: Earthcomber for iPhone [Back to News Reports]

28th November - Earthcomber has just released a new version of its Earthcomber application for use on the iPhone. If you’re not familiar with Earthcomber, it’s a really easy to use application (a “personal radar”, as Earthcomber calls it) for finding movie theaters, airports, ATM machines, restaurants, and more for over 10 million places around the USA, all from your mobile. The application itself is free, and depending on your phone there’s even a local version that can be downloaded. Also, if you sign up and log-in, you can share your location, messages and more between other registered users.

The new iPhone-friendly version features a speed increase and even images from many locations, and works completely over the web.

Here’s a screen showing the Looklists

For my test I went to Earthcomber.com and then clicked on the iPhone START HERE button. I was then able to see all of the attractions around my area and navigate through using a “looklist” such as Brands, Essentials, Fun Times, My Day Off, and more. If you don’t want to use a “looklist”, you can search using the search box at the bottom of the screen. The interface is very fast and the information is comprehensive. For example, it immediately told me about a bunch of museums within 20 miles of me that I didn’t even know existed. I also looked at movies and it gave me the show times for the local theater–nice! Another cool feature is the ability to switch to Business mode (see image below), which immediately shows you links to lists of ATMs, airports, and other business-oriented activities.

Business mode-oriented looklists

Another interesting feature is available to registered users and is called “Spot People”. You basically invite your “Peeps” and once they accept it shows you their location in relation to yours (see below) either in miles or visually on a map. You can also send them a message, but not in an IM or chat way, unfortunately.

I can see how far my peeps are from me miles-wise

Given its price and ease of use, it’s now a new must-have for everyone. Give it a go at Earthcomber.com and send me an invite if you want to add me to your “peeps” list.
